Apple Butter

We went to the Happy Apple Farm, an apple farm near where we live last weekend and I was looking for a recipe to use all of the apples that we picked. This apple butter recipe was really easy, yummy and would make great gifts!
5 1/2 lbs apples peeled, cored and finely chopped
4 cups sugar
2 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp ground cloves
1/4 tsp salt
Place everything in a slow cooker and mix well. Cover and cook on high for 1 hour. Turn heat to low and cook for 9 to 11 hours, stirring occasionally, until mixture is thick and dark brown. Uncover and cook for 1 hour. Stir with a whisk to increase smoothness. Spoon mixture into desired containers and refrigerate, freeze or can.
*Note: I used a mixture of Red Delicious, Gala, and Jonathan apples. I thought 4 cups of sugar was a lot so I only used 3/4 cup and it turned out delicious. It probably depends on the sweetness of your apples. Also, after I peeled and cored the apples I shredded them with a cheese shredder directly into the slow cooker. It was faster than finely chopping. Enjoy!
